You know one of the things that we're told about invention is, it's always to solve a problem. Build something that solves a problem.
And we design and build underwater drones. ROV stands for Remotely Operated Vehicle.
我们设计和制造水下无人机。ROV 是远程操作工具（Remotely Operated Vehicle）的缩写。
And it's basically an underwater drone or an underwater robot. So it goes beneath the surface and sends live video up a very thin tether to the operator back on the surface.
The real seed of the idea was with my friend Eric. He told me this wonderful story about this underwater cave that had rumors of gold in there from the gold rush.
And all these treasure hunters had tried to go and get it. And he wanted to build an underwater robot to go and explore.
And I was so taken by the story. I threw in with him right away and started asking people for help and feedback and improving the designs so we could actually get it to work.
When we explored the cave we didn't find any gold. The thing we found was this interesting potential future where all of a sudden it doesn't cost a lot of money to build the tools for exploration anymore.
And that you actually have access to all the tools that you need. So everybody knows the big stats that the ocean covers 71% of the earth.
But what most people don't realize is that we've just started going beneath the surface. Jacque Cousteau invented modern scuba diving in the 40s.
And it wasn't until the 50s and 60s that that really caught on in earnest. That's like 50,60 years of actually going beneath the surface and studying.
And I think these new low-cost underwater drones are a big step in the next era of underwater exploration, where we're going. And all of us are going.
All you're going to need is a connection to the internet. We're gonna find shipwrecks.
We're gonna find new species. But the most important thing for me is not what we find.
It's that so many millions more people are gonna be able to look. That they're able to be on the cutting edge of what humans know and what humans understand to feel like they're a part of the process of discovery.
Because that's cool. You just need to get your friends together and go outside and explore.
This was just a group of us who had a thirst for adventure we wanted to explore the unknown. And it's brought us on this incredible journey.
